NVIDIA’s Scope 3 Emissions Skyrocket Nearly Threefold as Greenpeace Calls for Urgent Supply Chain Decarbonization

NVIDIA’s Fiscal Year 2026 Sustainability Report has revealed a dramatic surge in its Scope 3 greenhouse gas emissions, nearly tripling from 3,638,432 metric tons of carbon dioxide equivalent (MT CO2e) in FY2024 to 10,700,940 MT CO2e in FY2026. This substantial increase, which now rivals the annual emissions of a medium-sized country like Lebanon, has prompted renewed calls from environmental advocates for the chip giant to accelerate decarbonization efforts within its extensive supply chain.

The report, released today, highlights that the overwhelming majority of NVIDIA’s carbon footprint—over 99%—stems from Scope 3 emissions. These are indirect emissions occurring in the value chain of the reporting company, including those generated upstream from the production of components, materials, and manufacturing services essential for NVIDIA’s globally dominant GPUs and AI systems. This trend indicates a growing reliance on manufacturing hubs in Taiwan and South Korea, where hundreds of NVIDIA’s ecosystem partners operate, effectively shifting a significant portion of the emissions burden to these regions.

"Jensen Huang reiterated in the sustainability report that AI is a ‘five-layer cake’ with energy being the foundation. He admitted that ‘the energy challenge is real. It’s solvable,’ and pointed to renewable energy as a key part of the solution," stated Rachel Yu, Greenpeace East Asia Climate and Energy Campaigner. "However, NVIDIA’s foundry suppliers in East Asia are heavily relying on fossil fuels. From what the company has reported to date, we have yet to find any evidence of NVIDIA making renewable energy investments in its supply chain."

The Growing Shadow of Upstream Emissions

NVIDIA’s reliance on third-party manufacturers for its cutting-edge technology places a significant portion of its environmental impact beyond its direct operational control. The reported nearly threefold increase in Scope 3 emissions underscores the critical challenge of decarbonizing a complex global supply chain. Taiwan, a global hub for semiconductor manufacturing, hosts over 500 NVIDIA ecosystem partners and plays a pivotal role in producing components for critical infrastructure like the NVIDIA Vera Rubin observatory. Similarly, South Korea is home to key NVIDIA partners such as SK Hynix and Samsung Electronics, who are crucial suppliers of advanced memory chips essential for AI accelerators.

The emissions generated by these manufacturing processes, from the extraction of raw materials to the energy-intensive fabrication of silicon wafers, contribute significantly to NVIDIA’s overall carbon footprint. The company’s "fabless" model, while enabling flexibility and innovation, necessitates a deep and proactive engagement with its supply chain partners to drive environmental improvements.

Greenpeace’s Scrutiny and Calls for Action

Greenpeace East Asia has been a vocal critic of NVIDIA’s progress on supply chain decarbonization. Previous research by the organization has placed NVIDIA behind its industry peers in addressing emissions within its manufacturing network. In contrast, other major technology companies, such as Google, have been actively supporting their East Asian suppliers in transitioning to renewable energy sources through initiatives like power purchase agreements (PPAs) and direct investments in renewable electricity infrastructure.

A recent analysis by Greenpeace East Asia, examining NVIDIA’s supply chain decarbonization progress, revealed that as of March 2026, only approximately 24.09% of the electricity consumed by the company’s top 20 manufacturing suppliers in East Asia was derived from renewable energy. This figure, based on responses to the Carbon Disclosure Project (CDP) questionnaire, paints a stark picture of the reliance on fossil fuels within NVIDIA’s production ecosystem.

"When confronted by Greenpeace East Asia activists in Taipei last month, Jensen Huang acknowledged the importance of investing in renewable energy with its suppliers," Yu added. "With NVIDIA’s supply chain emissions almost tripling, the case for immediate, concrete action to decarbonize its manufacturing supply chain is urgent. It needs to start with setting clear, time-bound renewable energy targets for its supply chain in East Asia."

The sustainability report itself, while acknowledging the energy challenges, has been criticized by environmental groups for a lack of concrete commitments and demonstrable actions related to supply chain renewable energy investments. The absence of details on PPAs or direct investments in renewable electricity infrastructure by NVIDIA for its suppliers raises concerns about the company’s commitment to translating its stated goals into tangible outcomes.
